Last week, I bought seeds to plant! The weather was beautiful. The next day I woke up to snow on the ground. It must be spring. I am eager to plant a small garden. Mostly a salad garden--lettuce, spinach, peas, tomatoes. A fresh salad right outside my door! I like to plant 3 kinds of leaf lettuce. It is amazing also how long it lasts in the refrigerator after picking.
The spring/summer after my youngest was born, I planted a vegetable garden. I called it my "therapy garden". And it was theraputic--being outside, digging in the dirt, watching things grow, and then eating what your grow. Gives you more good "warm fuzzies" than just keeping the kitchen clean and changing diapers! I had 5 children, 3 of them age five and under at the time. Gardening did me good. The next year I didn't plant, except for tomatoes, but the lettuce all came back up again. It was so cool--the reward without the work.
I like to use the Square Foot Gardening method. You can read about it HERE and also on the website, Food Storage Made Easy. You can garden in a very small area and it is easy to take care of as far as weeding and watering. I have a book about it. You can search the web and find sources about it too, or buy yourself a book (or borrow mine).
I can't wait until the snow melts (again) and so I can get to work on my little garden.
ps--It is a great activity for kids to get involved in too!
